Minecraft, that endlessly creative sandbox from Mojang Studios, comes in two main flavors: Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.
If you’re wondering which one you get to play on PlayStation 5 (PS5), here’s the deal: Minecraft on PS5 is the Bedrock Edition.
Let’s dig into why that is and what it means for you as a player.

Bedrock vs. Java: What’s the Difference?
- Java Edition: This is the original Minecraft, built for PC, Mac, and Linux. It’s a favorite for modders, thanks to all the customization, and usually gets the latest updates first.
- Bedrock Edition: Designed for cross-platform play, Bedrock runs on consoles (like PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch), mobile devices, and Windows 10. It offers features like cross-play, so you can team up with friends on all sorts of devices, plus a marketplace for skins, textures, and worlds.
Minecraft on PlayStation: A Quick History
Minecraft landed on PlayStation with the Console Edition, made specifically for consoles like the PS3 and PS4.
In December 2019, Mojang upgraded the PS4 version to Bedrock Edition. This update let PS4 players join the cross-platform crowd and play with folks on Xbox, Switch, mobile, and Windows 10.
Minecraft on PS5: Bedrock Confirmed
The PS5, which arrived in November 2020, supports backward compatibility with PS4 games.
Since the PS4 version of Minecraft is Bedrock, that’s what you’ll get on your PS5. There’s no native PS5 version of Minecraft yet, so you’re basically running the PS4 Bedrock Edition on your new console.
On the bright side, the PS5’s stronger hardware might make things run smoother or load up faster, even if it’s technically the same game.
Why Not Java on PS5?
You won’t find Java Edition on the PS5—or any console, actually. Here’s why:
- Tech Limitations: Java Edition runs on the Java programming language, which just doesn’t mesh well with how consoles are built. Consoles usually use languages like C++ for better performance.
- Mojang’s Plan: Bedrock is Mojang’s pick for consoles and cross-platform play. Java stays exclusive to PC, where modders and longtime fans hang out.
- No Cross-Play: Java doesn’t offer cross-play with consoles or mobile, which is a big deal for most console gamers.
Even if a native PS5 version comes out in the future, it’d almost certainly stick with Bedrock to keep cross-platform play alive.
Quick Summary
- PS5 Version: Bedrock Edition (via PS4 backward compatibility).
- Native PS5 Version: Not yet, but it’d be Bedrock if it ever happens.
- Java on PS5: Nope, that’s still just for PC.
