If you are looking to know about the LED-backlit LCD, then this is the right post.

This post would involve the backlight technology involved in the monitor.

Generally, for the LCD panel (Liquid Crystal Display), the backlight is CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps).

Why Should you Trust Me? Hi, I am Anirban Saha, an Engineer with a Specialization in Electronics and Communication Engineering. I have experience in Smart TVs, Electronics circuits, and Computer peripherals.

LED backlit LCD

Let’s get started!

What is a LED-backlit LCD Display?

A LED-backlit LCD is a display technology that uses LEDs(Light Emitting Diodes) to backlight the screen. This allows for increased contrast and brightness as well as reduced power consumption. LED-backlit LCDs are becoming increasingly popular due to their efficiency and low price.

It also provides wider viewing angles and faster response times than traditional fluorescent or CCFL displays.

LED-backlit LCDs are used in many different products such as televisions, computers, mobile devices, tablet PCs, and handheld game consoles.

Overview of LED-Backlit LCDs

LED-backlit LCDs are a type of flat panel display that uses LED backlighting instead of the cold cathode fluorescent (CCFL) backlighting used in traditional LCDs.

This allows for a thinner screen, brighter images, and lower power consumption.

Most LED-backlit LCDs use a white LED backlight, but some models use RGB LEDs to create a wider color gamut.

In edge-lit models, the LEDs are placed around the edge of the screen and light the panel from behind.

In back-lit models, the LEDs are placed behind the panel and light it from behind.

LED Arrangement in LED-Backlit LCD panels

Backlight in LED-Backlit LCD panels

LEDs are usually arranged in a grid pattern on the back of LCD panels. The layout of LEDs is important because it affects the quality of the image on the screen.

There can be several types of arrangements for LED backlighting in these LED-backlit LCD displays:

Edge-Lit LEDs(LED)

In the case of the Edge-lit LED TVs, the LED backlight lies on the edge of the panel and does not illuminate from the back of the panel. Edge-Lit LEDs became popular just after the Backlit LED.

Direct-Lit LEDs(DLED)

Direct-lit Light Emitting diode is another type of backlight that stays on at the back of the panel lighting the entire screen.

Local Dimming

TVs with local dimming create a more realistic picture by controlling the brightness of different parts of the screen.

This is done by having small backlights behind the screen that can be turned on and off independently.

This technology has been around for a while, but it has been getting better and better. Some TVs now have zones that can be controlled with amazing precision.

This allows for a much more realistic picture, especially when watching dark scenes.

Full-Array Local Dimming(FALD)

Full-Array Local Dimming (FALD) is a type of LED backlighting that uses an array of LED backlights behind the screen.

This type of backlighting allows for more accurate control over the brightness and darkness of different parts of the screen.

This is in contrast to edge-lit LED backlighting, which can only light up the edges of the screen. FALD is available on some high-end TVs and offers better picture quality than edge-lit LED TVs.

Benefits of LED-backlit LCD monitor

The backlight used in the LED-backlit LCD is LED only. So, it has several benefits:

1. Improved Color Gamut:

As the backlight is LED, the color gamut is broader and richer than the CCFL. LED-backlit LCDs offer a range of viewing angles and faster response time.

LED backlights produce whiter whites and blacker blacks, so the colors on the screen are more vibrant and lifelike.

This is because LEDs can produce a wider range of colors than CCFLs.

The color gamete in LED-backlit LCD looks amazing and vibrant to watch movies, games, and much more.

2. Improved Contrast Ratio with Deeper Blacks:

LED-backlit LCD TVs offer deeper blacks and improved contrast ratios over CCFL-backlit LCDs.

This is due to the fact that LEDs can be turned off completely, while CCFLs cannot. As a result, black levels are improved and overall contrast ratios are increased.

3. Power Saver:

LED-backlit LCD televisions are more power-efficient than traditional LCDs. LED-backlighting uses a fraction of the power of a traditional CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamp) backlight, and because the LEDs are mounted near the edge of the screen, they can be turned off completely when the image is dark, saving even more power.

According to a study by Tomshardware, LED light consumes 30% to 40% less power than running a screen with 100% brightness to 50% brightness. So, they are energy efficient.

4. Better Viewing Angle:

LED-backlit LCD televisions offer a much better viewing angle than traditional CCFL-backlit LCD televisions.

This is because the LEDs that backlight the LCD panel are placed around the edge of the television, whereas the CCFLs used in traditional backlighting are in the middle of the display.

Because of this, LED-backlit LCDs are less likely to show image distortion when viewed from an angle.

5. Long Lifespan:

Another advantage of LED-backlit LCD TVs is that they have a longer life span than other types of TVs like CCFL LCD and Plasma TVs.

The LED backlight is also more durable than traditional fluorescent or CCFL lamps. It does not produce much heat while running on low power.

6. Faster Response Time:

LEDs have a faster response time than CCFL. LED-backlit LCDs are usually more responsive, with less motion blur than other technologies.

Therefore they can be used in fast-moving content such as video games or movies.

7. Eco-Friendlier:

LED backlights have a longer lifespan as compared to CCFL. LED-backlit LCDs are more eco-friendly, with the reduced environmental impact of their disposal in landfills.

LED lighting is also safer and easier for maintenance than fluorescent or LED lighting. You can recycle LED-backlit LCDs with less environmental impact than other display technologies.

Drawbacks of LED-Backlit LCD

1. More Expensive:

The LED backlights in LED-backlit LED displays are also more expensive than CCFL lamps which can make them less cost-effective and efficient for large display screens.

2. Lower Luminance:

LED-backlit LED displays also offer lower luminance levels than CCFL lamps.

3. Backlight bleed and IPS Glow:

LED-backlit LED screens also suffer from the so-called Backlight bleed, which is a downside. On the corners, also some glow occurs known as IPS Glow.

Is LED-backlit LCD good?

There are many different types of LCD screens on the market today. LED-backlit LCD is one type, and it has many benefits over other types.

LED backlighting is more power-efficient than other backlighting methods.

The picture quality is also generally better with LED backlighting. Colors are more vibrant and blacks are richer.

If you’re looking for a new LCD screen, be sure to consider an LED-backlit model.

Conclusion

Let’s conclude the post on LED-backlit LCD!

This LED Backlit technology offers better contrast, wider viewing angles, and faster response times than traditional fluorescent or CCFL LCD displays.

I hope you enjoyed reading this post.
